Cara Lodge Hotel

My wife and would like to offer our sincere apologies to a few of the staff at Cara lodge in Georgetown, Guyana. First of all to the two receptionists we encountered on our three separate stays in April - it was very thoughtless of us to arrive during the day and disturb you by wanting to check in. Furthermore we didn’t know it was rude to smile and be friendly or we certainly wouldn’t have done so, and should not have been surprised that you did not return the smiles. It was also especially inconsiderate of us to have expected someone to help take our one bag up three flights of steep and narrow stairs, even though we were staying in the Quamina Suite - your top accommodations. To compound our rudeness I personally apologize to the receptionist I asked for glue or something to help reattach a sole that had come loose on my sneaker. I should not have been surprised that you didn’t give a damn and offer any kind of help. We also offer our most sincere apologies to the tall waitress at breakfast - there is no reason for you to smile and be pleasant at 8AM when we were they only people in the restaurant. We also apologize for disturbing you at the bar in the afternoon and we know we were because you made it very obvious. We would however like to thank the barman and the two waiters who looked after us so wonderfully at our delicious rum tasting dinner, and the pleasant and helpful young man on our second and third stays who did carry our bag up the three flights of steps.

Our group is a surgical team working for 1 week in Georgetown 4x/year. We chose Cara Lodge on the recommendation of the hospital’s Board Chair. Every aspect of our interaction w/all associated w/the Lodge has been outstanding. Reservations accommodated the team even with our changing room needs 3x! The food is delicious. All servers are pleasant and efficient! The rooms are just fine; clean, quiet, comfortable and a great shower! We are returning for our third visit in May and will do so for our Nov. mission. Other hotels were suggested as they are less expensive and closer to the hospital but all team members agreed that they feel safe and the staff is very responsive and accommodating and prefer to stay at Cara Lodge.

A charming old hotel in Georgetown..with walking lanes around, but a bit of a hike from the sea face and town. The rooms were well appointed, and comfortable. But since it was a period building..sans lifts - getting to & from the second floor with baggage was hard. The central atrium, with the bar ( which dished up an amazing pina colada ) was a lovely place to catch up with fellow travellers. The breakfast was great & in-house restaurant was lovely - food, ambiance, et al. Thought a bit pricy. A lovely hotel..would stay there again anytime

This hotel was badly let down by poor service. I suggest you allow at least an hour for breakfast, even if you're ordering the simplest things, as the service there in particular was painfully slow, even when not especially busy. Service was better at other meals, though still with room for improvement in terms of efficiency and friendliness. The quality of the food was generally good, though the Pepperpot was a big disappoin**ent, as there was as much fat, gristle and bones as meat. In the dark sauce, these were difficult to tell apart until you bit into them - not a pleasant experience. The rooms were good, although on one occasion my wife was deluged with brown water when taking a shower, messing up her hair for days. When we mentioned this to reception, we were told that there had been a plumbing problem which was now sorted, and if we let the taps run for a bit it would be OK (It wasn't actually clear until the next day). Much netter if we'd been told in advance that there was a problem. You may also need to double-pump the toilet in order to get it to flush. On one occasion, I met the room cleaner. She was really friendly and did her job perfectly well. If the other staff could have matched her, this would easily have been a five star review.

Only came here for dinner, which was very disappointing. New York prices (if not higher), but the quality/taste was extremely poor. Unfortunately, this was one of the worse meals we had during our stay in Georgetown.

Cara is good depending on your needs. If you are just staying in town and plan to spend time with family or friends you probably don't need Cara. For us, we were traveling around Guyana and needed a place with reliable breakfast and dinner for before we leave and after we return from trips. CONS: - Definitely needs some updates, easy ones like painting, deep cleaning (mold on fridge door, toilet bowl lever was very dirty, a big dead roach greeted us our first night) - Old school, so no elevator to help with luggage on any floor because even the first floor is a flight up PROS: - Food is EXCELLENT. Each meal was delicious, and the curry and roti were literally the best I've had in my life - Service is pretty good and helpful especially certain waiters - Central to the city

Situated in an old Colonial building, this is a decent place to stay. Not very luxurious, but the rooms are comfortable enough. The service was friendly, and the restaurant serves decent food. Georgetown does not have many options, so I would probably stay here again.

We were happy to have this recommended for the start and end of our tour to Guyana as we enjoy staying in historical buildings rather than large chain hotels. We stayed a total of five nights. We stayed in different rooms, all clean and compact. Rooms have air conditioning and overhead fans. Wifi worked well. Hand towels were available and then not available. There is a problem though with hot water. None for our initial two nights and just about for our last three nights ( we were promised this would be looked into and after a further change of room after our return, we had hot water). Others in our party did not have hot water either. Possibly we were told, due to a problem with the solar system, although it is not clear if some parts of the hotel are actually connected. One way or another, this is an international city hotel charging international prices and this needs to be resolved and information properly communicated so that informed choices can be made. Overall the decor was tired. There is a large breakfast menu but service was slow and given the wonderful produce in the local markets, the standard of fresh fruit was disappointing. It seems tourism will take off with the oil industry and direct flights from the UK. Cara Lodge is a beautiful building and can provide an excellent offering to compete with modern hotels. Times are tough but on the other hand we had an excellent experience in the interior of Guyana, so hope this city hotel will improve to compete.

We stayed here as part of the Guyana Nature Experience run by Wilderness Explorers. This is one of the nicest places I've ever stayed. It is a heritage building built of dark wood in the 1800s and has heaps of character. The rooms are clean and comfy and they provide heaps of product in the bathrooms (one shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion per day of stay) which is very welcome. Everything works. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and will order taxis, organise excursions etc. The outside bar with palm trees and fairy lights at night is just lovely and the restaurant is beautiful. Good food too. The sound of the orchestral frogs who sound like cello players is a fantastic backdrop to this amazing place. There is a supermarket nearby where you can buy water, snacks, toiletries etc. The area round the hotel is perfectly safe during the day as long as you don't take your camera out (use your phone) or wear expensive jewellery or clothing and is a good place for a stroll. You're fairly near a couple of nice churches and people are very friendly.
