The Colonsay Hotel

Stayed two nights in late March so hotel was lovely and quiet. Staff were lovely, very eager to help with anything we needed. Room was lovely as we had a window with a sea view and a window with a garden view Real log fire was going in the bar seating area as well as the dining area. Lovely and cosy. Food was a good standard. Had steak one night, salmon the other, both were amazing Would certainly stay here again

Had a 2 night stay here in May. The hotel is a few minutes walk from ferry terminal. The check in was easy and I was shown to my room. The staff were all friendly and acted in a professional manner. The restuarant was pleasant and the food good. as was the breakfast. The only complaint I had was that the toilet had not been flushed properly after the previous occupant had used it.

It now seems widely recognised (amongst staff and guests) that CH is seriously understaffed, with a feeling of the hotel being rundown. A simple example would be how lightbulbs had not been replaced in our room (we were missing four); the Wi-Fi did not work for the entire period of our stay (three nights); the bathroom was very tired, and yet the charge was over £200 a night; the breakfasts were poorly put together, and the options on the evening list were sp****, particularly for vegetarians; there are not enough people on call to do the minimum jobs of welcoming, running the bar, waiting on the tables. Staff were pleasant, but completely overrun and exhausted. The hotel has a fantastic history and an incredible reputation which is fast being tarnished. Time to put money back into the hotel, not just extract it.

We stayed in a rain-soaked September 2023. The food was very good and the chap who single-handedly served us and the room at dinner worked without complaint very efficiently on his own. But we picked up from our stay that the owner was cutting costs to the bone . None of the fires were lit and the public rooms lacked any feeling of welcome and warmth of decoration. The hotel phone was not manned - we received a reply days after we had left - and no-one at reception to say good-be to - a real lack of Scottish hospitality

The best thing about this hotel are the views The rooms are shabby with old mattresses and stained carpets and need an upgrade. No wi fi no television no heating The breakfast choice is restricted to a cooked breakfast with no continental choice no yogurt no prepared fresh fruit etc The cooked breakfast is not cooked by a chef but someone pretending to be one Better taking a tent with you than staying here

Our third holiday on Colonsay and our third stay at the hotel. Staff are wonderful, food is good, rooms are comfortable. I’ve put next year’s visit in the diary already and am looking forward to it. Thank you so much.

Very comfortable, friendly island hotel. Both breakfast and dinner were of a really good standard and the staff were attentive and interested at all times. I have a lot of experience of hospitality at home and abroad and felt the quality of accommodation, staff and catering were of a high standard and completely fitting to a very comfortable island stay. The manager could not have been more approachable and helpful. Lovely experience.

I stayed there for two nights in February 2023 and I really liked this hotel. It has a perfect location not far from the ferry and I got a fairly spatious, comfortable room (Whistlers room). The food was excellent, both the full Scottish breakfast in the morning and fish & chips in the evening. The hotel staff is very polite and supportive. I liked the naming of rooms, especially Dun Eibhinn (after the nearby fort). A great base to explore the beautiful island of Colonsay.

Mixed feelings about the Colonsay Hotel. From a recent stay ( 2 nights in Whistlers Room, Colonsay Hotel ) - your correspondent formed the opinion that it is a lovely hotel, the only one on a beautiful island, but there are areas where standards are not high,  and there are opportunities to remedy defects, or improve service:- - Toilet seat, very loose, in my room. - Shower, drains very slowly,  no grab handles for safety. - Shower, needs shelf for own toiletries. - Beds, extraordinarily soft, no support for back, which was troublesome to me. -  Extra staff to wait on tables are required, to cover busy periods, when delays can be long. - Training: when, due to circumstances   delay in providing service is anticipated, staff need to keep guests informed about how long the delay is expected to last. - Cleaning Rooms: neither of the Rooms booked by my party were cleaned, beds made or towels replaced,  for our entire stay. That despite hanging the sign on the door requesting servicing.
